A day filled with four incredible speakers

YES, April 21 was finally here: the day of the KIC conference Unfold. A livestream congress with four different lectures by Spot/de Oosterpoort, Concept7, Screen Noord and Hollandsnieuwe. They told everything about film and film production, web design and the organization of events. Although it was online, it was not less interactive!

Prior to the conference, the first fifty attendees could collect a nice goodie bag. Not only did the professional activities committee have pink cakes and Yahtzee in mind, but viewers could also win a JBL box by joining the lottery. Attention was required, because during the congress you could easily see your ticket on the screen.

After the opening by Sanne, Eva gave a nice introduction to the first speaker, Peter van Dijken. He is twenty-five years old and has been working at Spot/De Oosterpoort for two years. With an enormous passion Peter told about his dream job and daily activities at Spot. He is responsible for the marketing of pop music and festivals. Spot Groningen has about two hundred and fifty thousand visitors per year, five hundred concerts and performances, five festivals and various locations. Peter explains that the goal is to give people a place with meaning for both artist and audience. There can be different performances, which makes for a very colorful and diverse team. In a busy week, Peter and his colleague must meet a target of three thousand tickets. The basis of this target is that they have to work very hard. But how does this actually work?

You have up and coming talent and old talent. When an artist releases his or her album, they are with an agency. Meanwhile, Spot has a program department. The booker at Spot sees a new talent and offers the artist to perform in a small hall so they can get some experience on stage. When the contracts are ready, two lines are laid out. Peter takes care of the audience. After an extensive explanation of his work, Peter told us during the questions how he actually ended up at Spot. Something that many students found interesting, because an internship is getting closer for second year students and an internship at Spot sounds super fun and educational after this lecture!

The second lecture was held by Concept7. An interactive part where we went together to roast websites. One of those websites was that of the Hanzehogeschool. And I think we all agree that this site is totally unclear. Despite their recent changes, it is still a search for the right pages on their website. You have to click through very often before you finally get to the desired information. Super convenient of course as a future student interested in an education, so not. After the Hanzehogeschool it was Chrisguitars.com's turn. After this great roast, the first lottery ticket was drawn and everyone was waiting anxiously behind his/her laptop. The first winner was Mirthe with number 29.

And then it was Roxanne from Screen Noord. Roxanne is a commissioner at Screen Noord, she knows everything about making movies. Screen Noord is a production company that facilitates locations, crew, sponsors and clients' film crew. After her studies Roxanne went into practice and ended up in the film festivals. She told us all about Screen Noord. What they actually do, the filming process, their working methods and the goals and vision of Screen Noord. First we got to see a promotional video to get an impression of what Screen Noord really is. Screen Noord is a contact point for directors and producers who want to film in the North. They are an intermediary that makes sure you can start filming easily and quickly. It's great that this is a free service. Roxanne took us through the filming process. What steps do you need to take to achieve the best end result? When a film is released into the world, it is often preceded by a festive premiere. Roxanne tells us that there is a lot involved in the shoot, such as locations, hotels, transport and permits. On the website of Screen Noord you can get an impression of the different locations and you can contact them. Do you think after attending the conference: this seems like an interesting job? Then it's good to know that it requires the following skills: social skills, communication skills, problem solving skills, the ability to keep an overview, stress resistant skills and knowledge of the film process. Finally, Screen Noord is there to stimulate the film sector. Screen Noord is part of New Noardic Wave and Film Association Groningen, both of which are interest groups for filmmakers. This shows that there is also something to represent. How nice that we as future filmmakers can take advantage of this. The greatest goal is to stimulate the film industry!

Last but not least it was the turn of Hollandse Nieuwe. Hollandse Nieuwe is a network organization that, together with consultants and managers, brings together professionals and independent organizations for issues and activities concerning management and organizations. Thirteen years ago Hollandse Nieuwe was founded, specializing in interim management and consultancy. Dick Dam was present as a speaker. He described himself as a real Frisian; he is extremely stubborn. This already sounded interesting of course. With a smile and a Frisian spoken sentence he came up. Then he started with a little shout out to Tom, since they work together a lot and he is very happy with that. After three speakers Dick gave us the choice between the light, medium and hard version of the lecture. There was a preference for the hard version so we had to pay attention and ask questions. After a short introduction the workshop really started. Hollandse Nieuwe is specialized in communication. They have a large network of independent communication professionals. As they say themselves, they work only with the best. The question Dick asks is: when are you actually good at your job? They have their own ideas about this, but the market also has its own. Different clients from them are for examp healthcare, the public sector, education and so on. After proper research, they wrote a paper on what makes a good communication professional. Divided into three blocks, he took us through this process. This is of course super interesting for us, because who doesn't want to become the best communication professional?

All in all, it was a very inspiring conference from which we learned a lot. A big shout out to the girls from the professional activities committee, because it was top-notch!
