Hitchhiking contest 2018
Wow! It is the very first hitchhiking competition organised by KIC! After months of preparation, the enthusiastic KICers are finally ready to get going.
It all started on an early morning on the Grote Markt. Everyone was ready at half past eight, with backpacks and all. After an informative monologue from the hitchhiking committee, the hitchhiking broke loose. Cardboard signs and puppy eyes were ready.
The hitchhikers spread across the city in search of the optimal hitchhiking place. Many quickly found a ride, while others were still stuck in Groningen after an hour. These people were slowly starting to feel anxious. After all, they had to arrive on time for the pub crawl.
(Oh yes the destination was Ghent by the way)
The hitchhikers were busy with all kinds of activities on the road. Some were singing along to Natasha Bedingfield, some came into contact with the boys in blue while others were invited to a wonderful holiday in the o-so-sunny Spain.
Quite some teams got lucky and had one after the other car pick them up, transporting them closer to Ghent by the minute. Other teams were still busy lighting up their fifth cigarette at an almost empty gas station along the A27 at Meerkerk.
While everyone was still busy trying to get the attention of cars to end up somewhere close to Belgium, a picture of King KIC and his damsel appeared at exactly 13:30 with the place of destination in the background. Chairman Boyen de Leeuw succeeded in maintaining his undisputed position of leadership within the study association, alongside of him his hitchhiking buddy Geja van der Wal, by crossing the finish line as the first team.
The caption of this photo, "suck itttttttt", was discouraging for the remaining hitchhikers. Besides a couple of lucky teams, quite a few were pretty far away from Ghent. Fortunately, all teams, with or without problems with customs, arrived safely in Ghent where they could enjoy a fresh alcoholic snack.
After drinking a couple of cold ones, the pub crawl could finally start. For the losers, this evening was an excellent opportunity to ease their grief with an ungodly amount of liquid gold.
The early bird gets the worm! KIC got up early!
Between eight and ten everyone could be found in the breakfast room, because at half past ten there was a wonderful meetup at the Ghent Design Museum. An impressive exhibition of modern art could be found in this beautiful building. In addition to shooting Instagram-worthy snaps, the collection was also thoroughly enjoyed.
While the hikers were still happily remembering their visit to the museum, the time had come for a free afternoon. Thanks to the beautiful weather, everyone could enjoy the wonderful Ghent architecture and the delicious specialty beers that go hand in hand with it. After this afternoon it was time for a filling meal. After having a big dinner in it was time to head out and start drinking some more beer.
There wasn’t a lot of bedtime, but our adventurers didn’t need that anyway. Many were up early to clean up the room, pack up their belongings and check out at the hostel. After packing up the trip was as good as over. The winners were allowed to return to Groningen by car, together with the poor soul who injured his ankle. The remaining KICers then used the well-maintained railway system to find their way home safely.
All in all a very incredible journey full of adventures, new experiences, but mostly wonderful memories that will be cherished for a long time. Hitchhiking committee, thanks and salute!
